One of the most enjoyable parts of writing children’s stories is developing characters that resonate with young readers. Whether they’re relatable, funny, or heroic, my goal is to create characters that kids can see themselves in, or aspire to be. Here’s how I approach character creation in the Popop’s Magic Garden series:

Relatability Through Everyday Traits

To make characters engaging, I ground them in everyday emotions and experiences that children are familiar with. For instance, Addie is brave, curious, and always ready to face new challenges. Her spirit of adventure resonates with readers who are also naturally curious about the world. But Addie isn’t fearless—she faces her doubts, and that vulnerability is something kids can relate to. Her courage isn’t about being invincible; it’s about moving forward even when she’s unsure.

Similarly, Elsie represents a different kind of heroism—one based on empathy and sensitivity. She might not charge into danger like her sister, but her kindness and emotional intelligence are equally powerful. Children, especially those who may be more introspective or sensitive, see themselves in Elsie’s quiet strength.

Humor and Quirks that Kids Love

One way to make characters lovable is by giving them unique quirks and moments of humor. For example, Flumpkin is a whimsical creature who can be a little clumsy and absent-minded but has a heart of gold. His silly, sometimes bumbling nature makes him endearing to kids who enjoy lighthearted, funny characters.

I also work to create characters with relatable struggles and growth. Take Nuzzlefang, the friendly serpent who envies others with arms and wishes he could be different. When he finally gains arms through magic, the transformation doesn’t go as he expected—it also gives him legs, turning him into a creature he never imagined. At first, Nuzzlefang is uncomfortable with this change, but with support from his friends, he learns to accept his new form, realizing that even though he looks different, who he is inside hasn’t changed.

Nuzzlefang’s journey speaks to the changes everyone goes through, especially while growing up. His story reminds readers that even if you change on the outside, you are in charge of who you are inside. It’s a message of self-acceptance: no matter how others see you, you can stay true to yourself. For kids navigating their own journeys, Nuzzlefang’s story shows that we’re always in control of who we become.Humor is a tool I use to bring characters closer to young readers. Whether it’s a playful interaction or a funny mistake, these moments build connection and keep the story enjoyable.

Heroism in Everyday Moments

While the adventures in Popop’s Magic Garden are often magical and grand, the real heroism comes from everyday moments. The characters, especially Addie and Elsie, aren’t just heroic because they face magical challenges—they’re heroic in how they care for one another, how they solve problems together, and how they face their fears. Kids learn that heroism isn’t about superpowers or fighting villains; it’s about standing up for your friends, being brave when you feel small, and showing kindness in tough situations.

Creating a Balance

In crafting characters, I strive for a balance between relatability, humor, and heroism. It’s important to me that young readers not only enjoy the adventures these characters go on but also take away lessons that they can apply in their own lives. Whether they see themselves in Addie’s bravery, Elsie’s empathy, or even Flumpkin’s goofy charm, the goal is for them to connect, learn, and most of all, have fun.

That’s the magic of storytelling—creating characters that kids love not just because they are fun or adventurous, but because they are true to themselves. And when kids see characters who embrace who they are, it encourages them to do the same.
